2012 is the Year of the Dragon – the fiery, mystical Chinese creature known for its bravery, generosity and daring. What better way to celebrate than to join a team at this year’s Charleston Dragon Boat Festival?
Grand Ideas is thrilled to be handling the branding for this cancer benefit event, scheduled for Saturday, May 5th at Brittlebank Park. Teams of cancer patients, survivors and friends band together to race authentic 41-foot Chinese dragon boats on the beautiful Ashley River, finishing up with a picnic and awards.
Dragon boating is a 2000-year-old Chinese sport that traveled to the West in 1996, when a Canadian doctor created a Dragon Boat team to help cancer survivors exercise and regain their health. Since then, over a thousand cancer patients have formed teams, paddling dragon-shaped boats to the beat of an onboard drummer as they keep the spirit of the dragon alive.
Dragon Boating 2011 Charleston team members talk about the life-changing Dragon Boat experience in this video.
